We get the question with some regularity, “What programs should I update?”. “Is it safe to update Java? What about Flash”
So, I just wanted to write a quick post letting you know.
Christopher’s Computers recommends updating these programs when your computer alerts you that an update is available:
![]()
You will find these icons appearing in your ‘System Tray’ which is located in the lower right hand corner of your screen. It contains the clock.
It looks like this:
![]()
You may notice that in the above picture there is an update available for Windows and Java.
And in this one there is an update ready for Adobe Reader:
![]()
Clicking on that icon will open the updater which will allow you to install the update.
This will look something like this:

This is what the Java installer looks like:

In either case, simply click the ‘Install’ button and the program will take it from there.
As far as antivirus programs are concerned your individual antivirus program (Norton, Avast, McAfee, AVG, Kaspersky, etc) should be automatically updating itself. It has an icon in the System Tray as well.
Doing these updates when they become available is another way that you can help to maintain your computer and ensure it is safe, protected and working its best.
As always, please don’t hesitate to call, email, or drop by.
